Trésors d’une île

This thesis aims to trace the artistic relations between France and Great Britain by detailing the reception of the English school in Paris in the 18th century. The reconstruction of the display and circulation of English works of art in Paris and the rediscovery of artists' activity on French soil allows to build a panorama that features collectors, men of letters, artists and works ofart. Not only will many aesthetic or technical debates will be traced, but as well impact on the artistic rejection and their role in the history of art collection, reception and production will also be analyzed. Part of the thesis is devoted to the reconstruction ofthe presence of English works of art and the collections that held them in Paris throughout the 18th century. Through the analysis of sales catalogues, tourist guides and archives, we were able to reconstruct a corpus of works that highlights the important presence of English prints, especially mezzotint. Through the analysis of the theoretical discourse as well as the dynamics of collecting, we were able to determine the role played by the mezzotint, and then stipple engraving, in the creation of an idea of English school. Thus, English artistsbegan to be recognized for their artistic quality. Their works took then an important place in the Parisian market. At the same time, this phenomenon is favored by the different types of relationships established between French artists, collectors, or Parisian merchants, with British artists, which will open a new analysis for the reception process.

Cette thèse entend retracer les relations artistiques entre France et Grande-Bretagne en détaillant la réception de l’école anglaise à Paris au XVIIIe siècle. La reconstruction de la visibilité des œuvres d’art anglaises à Paris et la redécouverte de l’activité des artistes sur le sol français permettent de construire un panorama qui met en scène collectionneurs, hommes de lettres, artistes et œuvres d’art. Non seulement les nombreux débats esthétiques ou techniques seront retracés, mais leur impact sur la réflexion artistique et leur rôle dans l'histoire de la collection, de la réception et de la production de l'art sont également analysés. Par le biais du dépouillement des catalogues de vente, des guides touristiques et des archives, nous avons pu reconstruire un corpus d’œuvres qui souligne la présence importante d’estampes anglaises, en particulier de la manière noire. Aussi à travers l’analyse du discours théorique, nous avons pu déterminer le rôle joué par l’estampe à la manière noire et puis par la stipple engraving dans la création d’une idée d’école anglaise. Ainsi les artistes anglais commencent à être reconnus pour leur qualité artistique et leurs œuvres prennent une place importante dans le marché parisien. Ce phénomène est aussi favorisé par les différents types des relations instaurées entre artistes français (ainsi que les collectionneurs, ou marchands parisiens) avec les artistes britanniques ; ce qui définit un autre angle d’analyse pour l’étude de la réception.
