George Nassau Clavering, III Earl Cowper (1738-1789), better known in Italy as Lord Cowper, is a prominent figure in the Florence of the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, of whom he was a friend.
A wealthy Englishman, who arrived in Tuscany in 1759 as a stop on his Grand tour, he remained there until his death. He did not hold any diplomatic office, but enjoyed high regard at the court. He was at the fore in social life as an organizer of parties, dances, concerts and musical performances, he set up a prestigious art collection and promoted a renowned scientific cabinet.
This biography, the result of extensive research conducted also in England where his archive is kept, brings together the many aspects under which it is possible to approach the character from different disciplinary perspectives.
