This special issue covers the entire history of universal expositions in Europe, starting from the Great Exhibition of London (1851) which had over six million visitors. The essays included, inspired by the international panel about Universal Exposition in Europe. Figures, public, memories between metropolis and colonies, 1851-1939 (University of Padova, Italy, 13-15 novembre 2014), represent the rich and varied framework of studies and research lines developed in recent years around such themes, and also reflect the current debate on “expo” as a past, present and future phenomenon.
