Molti inglesi e americani sono giunti a Firenze, soprattutto a partire dagli anni trenta dell’Ottocento, chi per studiare l’arte e la letteratura italiana e trarre da queste ispirazione per la propria opera, chi attratto dal clima mite della città che si credeva adatto a curare le malattie polmonari, chi per la bellezza delle colline circostanti e per il contenuto costo della vita che permetteva di soggiornare con agio in edifici ricchi di storia. Il libro rende omaggio a questa comunità e approfondisce alcune figure che tra Ottocento e Novecento hanno in modo così rilevante inciso sulla storia fiorentina, soffermandosi in particolare sui luoghi che anno frequentato o abitato, così da legare i loro nomi alle strade, ai palazzi, alle case della città.

Especially since the 1830s, many English and American people have moved to Florence. Some of them wanted to study Italian art and literature in order to draw inspiration for their work; others were attracted by the mild climate of the city that was believed to be suitable for treating lung disease; others were fascinated by the beauty of the surrounding hills and by the moderate cost of living. The book pays tribute to this community and analyzes some of the figures that have had a significant impact on the history of Florence between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It focuses in particular on the places they lived in or frequented, thus linking their names to streets, buildings and houses of the city. An international theme so far little studied, and even more poignant on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Florence as a capital city.
