La pubblicazione è stata realizzata in occasione dalla mostra dedicata alla cartografia allestita presso la fiorentina Accademia dei Georgofili e visitabile dal 15 marzo al 19 aprile 2013.
Nel volume, che riproduce materiale proveniente dall’Archivio e Biblioteca dell’Accademia dei Georgofili e dell’Istituto Geografico Militare, sono presentate le diverse prospettive della descrizione del territorio: gli studi finalizzati al miglioramento agricolo e alle bonifiche, l’evoluzione delle tecniche di rappresentazione cartografica, le descrizioni di naturalisti, viaggiatori e geografi.
La rappresentazione del territorio, attraverso la scrittura e la cartografia, costituisce un settore di studi a cui i Georgofili hanno dedicato particolare attenzione fin dalle origini dell’attività accademica. La conoscenza storico geografica dei particolari ambienti e delle diverse zone agricole costituiva un elemento essenziale per il miglioramento dell’agricoltura e per gli interventi di bonifica realizzati tra Settecento e la prima metà del Novecento.

The volume is inspired by the exhibition on cartography that took place in the Accademia dei Georgofili of Florence, between March and April 2013. The book, which reproduces material from the Archive and the Library of the Accademia dei Georgofili and from the Military Geographic Institute, presents different perspectives of the description of the territory: studies aimed at improving agriculture and land reclamation, the evolution of cartographic representation techniques, the descriptions of naturalists, travelers and geographers. The representation of the territory, by means of writing and cartography, constitutes a field of study to which the Academics of the Georgofili have paid special attention from the very beginning of their activity. The historical knowledge of particular geographical environments and of different agricultural areas was an essential element for the improvement of agriculture and for the remediation carried out between the Eighteenth and the first half of the Twentieth century.
