La Fratellanza Artigiana d’Italia, nata a Firenze nel 1861, si afferma immediatamente come la più importante associazione “operaia” nel panorama nazionale, sia per numero d’iscritti sia per ambizioni e prospettive politiche. Nell’intenzione dei suoi promotori, doveva estendersi a tutto il nuovo Stato e unificare, secondo l’espressione di Mazzini, “tutta la classe operaia da un punto all’altro d’Italia”. Il volume affronta in maniera approfondita il periodo delle origini, nel quale l’associazione coniuga i linguaggi della tradizione corporativa agli ideali politici liberali e progressisti. L’istruzione, come strumento per integrare i lavoratori nel nuovo stato nazionale, è al primo posto fra le sue finalità statutarie. La Fratellanza viene così a rappresentare una delle proposte più interessanti della pedagogia lavorista e insieme patriottica, per capire i caratteri dello sviluppo di una identità nazionale presso le classi popolari e lavoratrici. La seconda parte del volume è dedicata alle attività collaterali e all’analisi della base sociale dalle origini fino agli anni ’30 del XX secolo.

The Artisan Brotherhood of Italy, born in Florence in 1861, established itself immediately on the national scene as the most important working-class association, both for the number of members and for its ambitions and political views. Purpose of its promoters was to extend it to all the new State and to unify, according to Mazzini’s words “the whole working-class from one end of Italy to another”. The book deals extensively with the period of the origins, in which the association combines the languages of corporate tradition to the liberal and progressive political ideals. Education, as a means to integrate workers into the new national state, is at the first place among its statutory purposes. The Brotherhood thus represents one of the most interesting proposals of the labour and patriotic education, to understand the characters of the development of a national identity among the lower and working classes. The second part of the book is dedicated to the side activities and to the analysis of the social base from the beginning to the 30s of the XX century.
