Vi è stato un tempo in cui l’arma bianca non era solo strumento di guerra, ma anche un presidio per la difesa della propria persona e del proprio onore. Non fa meraviglia quindi che esperti artefici si siano dedicati a migliorarne forma e prestazioni, apportando le modifiche necessarie per adeguarle a esigenze sempre nuove, non escluse quelle della moda. L’evoluzione delle armi da difesa e da duello, a partire soprattutto dal XVI secolo sino al primo Novecento, costituisce un importante capitolo della storia della tecnologia, delle arti applicate e del gusto, oltre che dell’arte dello schermire. Il rinnovarsi delle forme e degli ornamenti, funzione dei mutamenti intervenuti nella tecnica della scherma, ma anche nella società e nel costume, è ampiamente documentato dall’autore e da lui stesso illustrato, in collaborazione con Daisy Mazzetti, evidenziando i particolari più significativi, con disegni di sua mano tratti da esemplari storici di armi bianche.

There was a time when the cold weapon was not only an instrument of war but also a safeguard for the defence of one’s person and one’s honour. So it comes as no surprise that expert manufacturers have improved the weapons form and performance, and made the required changes to adapt them to further demands, included the fashion ones. The evolution of self-defence and duelling weapons, in particular from XVI century to early XX, represents an important chapter in the history of technology, applied arts and taste, and in the art of fencing. The renewal of forms and ornaments, reflection of the changes in the art of fencing, but also in society and traditions, is widely showed by the author and by himself illustrated – together with Daisy Mazzetti – with drawings of historical samples of cold weapons made by him, which highlight their most remarkable details.
