En un vergel deleitoso
fui entrar, por mi ventura,
do fallé toda dulçura
e plazer müy sabroso.

Calandras e ruiseñores
en él cantan noche e día
e fazen gran melodía
en deslayos e discores,
e otras aves mejores,
papagayos, filomenas,
en él cantan las serenas
que adormeçen con amores.

Fray Diego de Valencia de León was author of 42 poems, all written between 1380 and 1410 approximately. He was a physician and a renowned theologian, skilled in many arts and sciences, as well as a poet much admired among his contemporaries. Besides several erudite poems dealing with complex theological questions related to scholastic philosophy, fray Diego also wrote exquisite lyrics inspired by the tradition of courtly love poetry, as well as satirical poems on the model of galician-portuguese cantigas d’escarnio.
