Alamanno Agostini was a political prisoner for 100 days on the Tuscan island of Elba, in Portoferraio, in the summer of 1833.  The authorities suspected him of taking part in an uprising and decided to imprison him without any trial. His prolific diary, that he wrote to struggle against depression, is published here. It provides a fresh look at a liberal Tuscan noble during the Risorgimento, as well as prison conditions under the Grand Duchy, which were pretty different from those described by Silvio Pellico who spent some months in Austrian prisons in Northern Italy. The book includes an introduction by Zeffiro Ciuffoletti.
