The art of goldwork has always been a characteristic of Florence’s culture and life. Since the 12th century, Florence has boasted supremacy in goldsmithing and, along with the Silk Guild of Por Santa Maria, has brought together precious materials with fascinating workmanship. Today, with the exhibition Arte Orafa a Firenze, la Cultura di un Mestiere [Florentine Goldsmith’s art, the culture of a craft] taking place in honor of the 70th International Craftsmanship Exhibition in the beautiful Grotte of the Fortezza da Basso, we present the history and exceptional products of this Florentine craftsmanship. Here, works in gold and silver are shown together to represent the high value that is given to jewels and accessories, and to the history and evolution of this art, as our training institutions demonstrate presenting with these models of different historical periods and pieces by master artists and sculptors.
