“Il legno, in cui è tagliato Pinocchio, è l’umanità, ed egli si rizza in piedi ed entra nella vita come l’uomo che intraprende il suo noviziato...” (Benedetto Croce). Queta critica, del 1937, innescherà un meccanismo di rivalutazione e rilettura del capolavoro collodiano in chiave non soltanto pedagogica, ma più ampiamente e altamente letteraria. Del successo che poi l’opera ha avuto ed ha non importa dire. Dalla prefazione di Francesco Gurrieri: “… Ora, dal territorio inconsueto e poco frequentato dell’umiltà, sorge questo Pinocchio illustrato dal Giangrandi: un artista che non ha mai inseguito il successo e non ha mai perseguito la pubblicità… che propone oggi, col sapore buono del pane fatto in casa in un forno a legna, la sua interpretazione iconografica di Pinocchio; della quale potremmo dire e sottolineare della sua personalissima cifra stilistica, della sua cultura artistica e d’altro ancora…”. Il volume, dalla veste tipografica particolarmente accurata, è rilegato con copertina rigida.
“The wood, in which Pinocchio was carved, represents the humanity, and he stands on his feet and enters the life in the same way of a man who starts his novitiate” (Benedetto Croce). This critic, dated back to 1937, has triggered a process of rereading and reevaluation of Collodi’s masterpiece, not only because of his pedagogical value, but also as an example of high literature. There is no need to mention the success that the novel gained and still has.
