The bibliography on Della Robbia’s glazed sculpture is vast, but little has been written on the part of their production regarding heraldic arms. Allan Marquand, one of the greatest scholars of Della Robbia’s majolicas, studied and cataloged these works for the first and only time in 1919.
After almost a century, this volume presents a reorganized and updated catalog, with particular attention to the attribution of individual artifacts to each member of the numerous Della Robbia family. The sculptures are then examined from a heraldic point of view, according to established laws and to the punctual terminology of a science that requires specific analysis of glazes, partitions and figures in their position, number and attributes. Introductory essays insert the arms in a very specific historical context.
