L’intero progetto del volume, insieme ad alcuni saggi sparsi, nasce dalla convinzione che la scrittura degli artisti, non sempre gradita dai critici e dagli storici dell’arte – artefici e manutentori autorizzati dell’esegesi – contribuisca a svelare gli snodi delle poetiche e dei registri formali dell’opera d’arte, a dissolvere i fumi e gli arbìtri concettuali, perfino a contrapporre letture alternative a quelle storicizzate e specialistiche. In questa direzione, molte pagine del libro si soffermano sulla scrittura degli artisti nel tentativo di ricomporre gran parte del quadro storico-artistico che va dall’Ottocento al secondo conflitto mondiale. Ed è attraverso le poetiche e le riflessioni degli artisti che si scopre un’altra storia dell’arte, certamente minore e poco nota ma forse altrettanto utile e legittima quanto quella degli specialisti più autorevoli.

The whole purpose of this volume, together with the various essays , arises from the conviction that the writing of artists, not always well received by critics and art historians – the authorized authors and keepers of interpretations – should assist in untying the knots of the poetics and formal strictures concerning works of art and dissolve the nebulosity and arbitrary concepts, even so far as to suggest contrasting alternative reading for such traditional and specialized ones.
Taking this course, many pages of the book contemplate the writing of artists in their attempt to recompose a good part of the historical artistic picture, starting from the Eighteen Hundreds up to the Second World War. And so through the poetry and reflections of artists one discovers another history of art, certainly minor and less known, but, perhaps, nevertheless as useful and legitimate as that of the most authoritative experts.
