L’ascesa al potere di Hitler nel 1933 pose immediatamente le autorità politiche e militari francesi di fronte al problema di come fronteggiare la minaccia tedesca, non solo sul piano diplomatico, ma anche su quello strategico. Una delle possibilità che si offriva a Parigi era la riedizione di un’alleanza con la ‘grande potenza’ dell’Est, l’Unione Sovietica che, a partire dagli inizi dello stesso anno, iniziò a manifestare un concreto interesse affinché tra Parigi e Mosca si sviluppasse un’attiva cooperazione militare.
David Burigana ha analizzato nel dettaglio questo importante episodio della storia del Novecento, avvalendosi di un’ampia e puntuale documentazione di tutte le fonti francesi disponibili, comprese quelle provenienti dagli archivi militari (da una vasta gamma di documenti di archivio alla produzione storiografica, alla memorialistica), senza trascurare al contempo gli elementi di carattere economico, nonché quelli relativi alla tecnologia degli armamenti.
In questo saggio si fa luce per la prima volta su un aspetto meno noto della politica estera francese, estendendo lo studio anche al complesso intreccio delle relazioni internazionali nel periodo in cui, con l’avvento del nazismo, gli equilibri europei erano destinati ad essere sconvolti.

The arrival to power of Hitler in 1933 obliged the French high political and military establishment to face the rising Nazi menace, not only at a diplomatic level, but also at a strategic one.
One of the solutions was the re-edition of the alliance with the ‘Great Power’ of the East, the Soviet Union which, from the very beginning of 1933, started to express a concrete interest for the development of an active military co-operation between Paris and Moscow. During the summer 1935, Stalin sent a secret mission to France with the objective of carrying out an agreement with the French and British governments against Hitler. Thus in June, Moscow dispatched to Paris, in the name of the Marshal Mikhaïl Toukhatchevski, an officer of the secret service and a man of Marshal Kliment Vorochilov in order to contact the high French military authorities. It was a secret mission and as such it remained until our days. David Burigana analyzed in detail the Soviet diplomatic-military relations with Paris, by means of exploiting in a full and specific way all the documentation and the sources available, not only in France but also in the United Kingdom and in Italy. He studied many military documents, including a vast range of files, historiographical records, memoirs, without forgetting those related to the economic aspects and the technology of the armaments. For the first time, a book that clarifies one of the less known aspects of the French foreign politics, while analyzing also the complex international interconnection of relations during the advent of Nazism, when all the European balances were destined to being upset.
