Sergio Batti

Born in Borgo Sansepolcro on the twentieth of May 1950. In 1964, he headed to Florence, where he freauented an artistic highschool with high grades. In 1969 he begins studying at the architecture faculty of Florence He experienced the period of the 'Movements' and youth protests with interest, while remaining in his own world somewhat 'detached' from events and circumstances. His paintings are nevertheless influenced by a critical attitude towards society: they are paintings of 'rupture'.In 1974 he graduated with a thesis in urban design, with the teacher Leonardo Savioli, obtaining honors and a publication. In 1975-1976 he worked as assistant of the teacher Savioli at the Arredamento Institute. From 1974 to 1977, he works with the architect Pesaro, He designed several residential and tourist centres, mostly in the areas of Romagna and Marche, as well as exhibition layouts, such as the one realised at the Trade Mart in Brussels in 1975. In 1977, he married Patrizia Laganà. In the 1980s and 1990s, his activity as a painter alternated with work in the field of interior design and advertising graphics. In 1989, he lives for a year in Athens, where he furnished a large room with polychrome marble mosaics, reminiscent of Florentine churches. Then, during these years, he lived more and more happily in the Maremma and in the Peloponnese, where he portrayed in colourful watercolours (used like tempera), everything that nature showed him (the 'Loves and Flowers' series). In the years from '89 to '91, he collaborated with the art magazine 'La Corte di Mantova', publishing short stories, poems and art criticism, and did the same from 1999 to 2001 with the magazine 'Soprattutto. From the second half of the 1990s until February 2002, the year he left us, he systematically devoted himself to his 'Visual Notes', where he portrayed the people he met in bars, clubs, streets (Florence, Maremma, Paris). In 2000, he returned to painting on canvas, oil paintings worked with a palette knife, as he did in the early days, but now colour dominates. In February 2002, he travelled to southern Morocco, meeting his destiny. Between the desert dunes and the ocean, an absurd car accident surprised him and drove him away from this world he loved so much, but which was so close to him.
