Vito Cappellini è nato a Pistoia e ha conseguito la laurea in Ingegneria elettronica presso il Politecnico di Torino. Dopo alcune attività nel settore del data processing e del controllo automatico, ha sviluppato attività di ricerca presso l’Istituto di Ricerca sulle onde elettromagnetiche del CNR di Firenze, dove ha condotto principalmente studi sulla ionosfera per mezzo di satelliti, su data processing, sulla telemetria e sulle comunicazioni digitali. È stato direttore dell’Istituto di Elettronica e dell’Istituto IROE di Firenze. Presso l’Università fiorentina ha conseguito il grado di Professore Ordinario di Comunicazioni elettriche e a ricoperto la carica di preside della Facoltà di Ingegneria dal 1993 al 1995.
I suoi principali interessi di ricerca sono: elaborazione digitale del segnale-immagine, comunicazione digitale, remote sensing, biomedicina, robotica e analisi e restauro di opere d’arte.In questi campi di studio ha pubblicato oltre 300 lavori e ha contribuito a numerosi altri libri: co-autore di Digital Filters and their Applications (Academic Press); curatore di Data Compression and Error Control Techniques with Applications (Academic Press) e di Time-Varying Image Processing and Moving Object Recognition (North-Holland).
È nel comitato editoriale di numerose riviste internazionali, quali «Signal Processing», «Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing» e «European Transactions on Telecommunications». Ha svolto il ruolo di chairman al workshop internazionale su Time-Varying Image Processing and Moving Object Recognition, e di co-chairman alla Conferenza EVA Florence.
È stato presidente di IEEE Middle&South Italy Section, rappresentante italiano per Seven Nations Cooperation Program su Remote Sensing from Space, presidente del Comitato tecnico-scientifico ITINERA. È nel comitato del gruppo di Italian Telecommunications Group, vice-presidente della Fondazione per la Meteorologia Applicata. Ha ricevuto la IEEE Centennial Medal. È fellow della IEEE, membro EURASIP, AEI, AIT.

Cappellini was born in Pistoia, Italy. He obtained the degree in Electronic
Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino. After some activity in the industry
on data processing and automatic control, he developed research activity at
Istituto di Ricerca sulle Onde Elettromagnetiche – IROE of National Research
Council (C.N.R.) in Florence, where he was mainly concerned with ionospheric
studies by means of satellites, data processing, digital telemetry and
communications. He obtained the Full Professor degree in Electrical
Communications at Florence University. He was Director of the Istituto di
Elettronica and of the IROE Institute in Florence. In 1993-1995 he was Dean of
the Engineering Faculty of Florence University.
His main research interests are: digital signal-image processing, digital
communications, remote sensing, biomedicine, robotics and art work
analysis-restoration. He has published over 300 papers in the above fields and
contributed to several books: co-author of “Digital Filters and Their
Applications” (Academic Press), editor of “Data Compression and Error Control
Techniques with Applications” (Academic Press), editor of “Time-Varying Image
Processing and Moving Object Recognition” (North-Holland). He is in the
Editorial Board of several international journals: “Signal Processing”
(Elsevier), “Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing” (Birkhauser), “European
Transactions on Telecommunications” (EUREL). He has been Chairman of the
International Workshops on “Time-Varying Image Processing and Moving Object
Recognition” and Co-Chairman of the EVA FLORENCE Conferences.
He was Chairman of the IEEE Middle&South Italy Section. He has been the
Italian Representative in the Seven Nations Cooperation Program on “Remote
Sensing from Space”. He was President of the Scientific-Technical Committee of
ITINERA (Italian Info-structure for European Research in Advanced
Communications). He is in the Committee of the Italian Telecommunications Group
(TTI). He is Vice-President of the Foundation on Applied Meteorology. He
received in 1984 the “IEEE Centennial Medal”. Professor Cappellini is fellow of
the IEEE, member of EURASIP, AEI, and AIT.
