Cy DeCosse was born in 1929 in North Dakota. His family moved to Minnesota when he was five. Cy went to a military school and St. Thomas College and then to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. DeCosse started working at a Minneapolis agency as a junior art director. At this time, photos were replacing illustrations in advertising. In order to better understand photography, DeCosse bought his first camera and turned the coal cellar in his basement into a darkroom, and began photographing everything around him. In 1954 he won a Fulbright scholarship to Italy. He was sent to Florence to help set up an advertising program at the Instituto d’Arte di Porta Romana. There, in addition to teaching advertising, he studied with Renzo Maggini. Upon returning to Minnesota Cy resumed his advertising career. In 1969 DeCosse formed his own firm. With the sale of the company in 1994, Cy returned to his first love, phoography. Even before the sale DeCosse began to explore the process of plaltinum printing. The next two years were spent experimenting and perfecting this alternative technique. In 2001, withKeith Taylor as printer, the two began the revival of the gum dichromate technique, an alternative process that produces a color print of extraordinary beauty. DeCosse’s philosophy is simple, “a photograph should be interesting to look at, I like toget in close, so you see things you’ve never seen before”. | |||
